About Gemma

Animal ID: 950745 How this pet arrived: This pet was brought in by a community member on 5/7/2025. Why this pet is the one for you:Gemma is a small, sensitive dog with a history of fear-based behavior, particularly around handling and unfamiliar people. She can display distance-increasing behaviors such as barking, growling, or "smiling" (submissive grin) when unsure, especially with new handlers or in confined spaces. However, with known handlers and a gentle approach-such as crouching, baby talk, and using playful gestures-Gemma quickly becomes affectionate, leaning into pets, soliciting attention, and even curling up on laps.

Though initially avoidant, Gemma warms up through treat-based interactions and patient introductions. Once comfortable, she walks well on leash, allows full-body handling, and seeks out closeness. She has been observed relaxing in offices, engaging with toys, and enjoying gentle petting sessions.

Gemma's handling sensitivity can resurface during medical care or restraint, especially when rushed or after stress (e.g., post-surgery), so adopters should go slow, use consent-based handling, and seek Fear Free veterinary support. She did well during a nail trim with calm, familiar staff and continues to show progress when her boundaries are respected.

Gemma previously lived with another. She would do best in a calm, patient home with respectful children and adopters committed to supporting her through gradual acclimation. A required behavior consult will help guide her transition. With the right environment, Gemma is affectionate, charming, and eager to bond.
